How to use the word frequency counter
Paste in your text and the tool splits it into words, counts how many times each one appears, and ranks them from most to least common. Matching ignores capitalisation by default, so "The" and "the" count together — switch on case-sensitive matching if you need them kept apart. Common filler words like "the", "and" and "of" are hidden by default so the list surfaces words that are actually distinctive to your text; untick the box to see every word, filler included.
Worked example
Input: "The dog chased the cat, then the cat chased the dog, and the dog barked at the cat again."
Result, with "hide common words" on (the default): dog — 3, cat — 3, chased — 2, barked — 1. Out of 19 words total, every instance of "the", "then", "and" and "at" is filtered out by the built-in common-word list, which is what surfaces "dog" and "cat" as the words actually carrying the sentence's meaning.
Frequently asked questions
- What counts as a repeated word?
- By default matching is case-insensitive, so "The" and "the" count as the same word. Turn on case-sensitive matching if you want them counted separately.
- What are common words and why hide them?
- Words like "the", "and" and "of" appear in almost any text and usually aren't interesting on their own, so hiding them helps surface the words that are actually distinctive to your text.
- Is my text saved anywhere?
- No. The word-splitting and counting both happen in your browser the moment you paste text in — useful if you're pasting something you wouldn't want leaving your machine, like a draft or a private document.
